From Sand to Module

1. Silicon : Silicon forms the basic raw material in the manufacturing process of solar pv module. It is most widely distributed in dust and sand as various forms of silicon dioxide or silicates. Over 90% of the Earth's crust is composed of silicate minerals, making silicon the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust after oxygen. Thus silicon is almost inexhaustible.

2. Ingots : In this production stage, highly pure silicon is melted into blocks at a temperature of 1,410 degrees Celsius and is then allowed to cool down until it hardens. These blocks are then shaped into square/round columns. These columns are known as ingots.

3. Silicon Wafer :Silicon ingots are then sliced into extremely thin wafers using wire cutting technology. Wafers are then cleaned and thoroughly tested before using them for the production of solar cells.

4. Solar Cell : The wafers are then treated to form solar cells. A solar cell is an electrical device that converts the energy of light directly into electricity by the process known as photovoltaic effect. It is a form of photoelectric cell which, when exposed to light, generates electric current.

5. Solar Modules : Solar cells are then framed into panels to form solar modules. Solar modules are weather proofed using protective coating. Solar modules are the end products and are ready to generate electricity.
